After a Nano 120, a Touch and the WYE which were and still are great commercial successes, Teslacigs continues its path to glory by offering us a new box, the Punk 220W. No need to bring out your old Sex Pistols and other Clash or Ramones vinyls, the box has only Punk in name and is more inspired by the Steampunk aesthetic dear to Jules Vernes than safety pins and checkered kilts of the insolent and enjoyable British musical trend. And that's good for its future in the vape since you know that the slogan of the fans of the peaks was “No Future”! 

Offered around € 76, the Punk therefore sends 220W using two 18650 batteries and is available in three colors. The first oscillates between brushed aluminum and gun metal, the second is bronze tendency and the last more copper. Something to satisfy metal lovers, a shame for a punk box!

Presenting all the modes of operation in vogue, the Punk therefore asserts itself as being up to date and, if its aesthetics bring it a little closer to its predecessor the Nano and will be all the rage during your next Mötorhead concert (Lemmy's not Dead!), Its vaping behavior aligns it with the current production of powerful and autonomous boxes, compatible with almost all atomizers on the market.

Reviewer's comments on physical characteristics and perceived quality

Once again, a great aesthetic effort has been made on Punk by the brand which has often distinguished itself in the past in this area. The box presents taut lines and sharp angles, witnesses of a desire to impose a massive and very “masculine” design. On the sides, polycarbonate windows let glimpse a worked interior, presenting cogs and other decorations typical of the steampunk panoply. The whole remains harmonious and quite discreet because the material has been tinted in order to avoid a visual ease which would undoubtedly have been too obvious. Some may regret it but, personally, I find it successful.

The design goes hand in hand with a very correct finish. The materials used are of good quality and communicate a perceived quality clearly oriented towards the upper segment. The zinc alloy has been particularly worked and the brushed finish is very sensual, giving the box a beautiful look. The smoked polycarbonate is very well assembled on the chassis and, even if the fingerprints will make their nest there, perfectly suits the whole, both aesthetically and qualitatively. Some ABS parts are present inside the box as on the inside of the battery hatch but their discretion means that the persistent impression leans more towards the metal side.

Printing corroborated by a significant weight that will destine our mod to a solid hand that will not interfere. However, Punk does not display outrageous dimensions, showing itself in the low average of the volumes occupied by the double battery boxes. 

If the two sides of the box are totally devoted to artistic expression, the main facade presents a readable and clear, monochrome Oled screen, which is overlooked by a metal switch whose handling is flexible and “clicky”. We will easily overlook the fact that the button moves a little in its enclave because this fact does not pose any problem in use. 

Below the screen sit three buttons to act on the visual interface. The first, circular, allows you to vary the illumination by LEDs of different colors inside the box. Here is a gadget that, personally, I would have done well without but I know people who like this type of “vapor and light” show so I will refrain from any judgment. Especially since the function is disengageable. The [+] and [-] buttons are enthroned on the bottom of the facade and are reactive and voluntary. 

On the top-cap, there is a connection plate in the form of a gear whose positive pin, on spring, is made of brass. On the bottom-cap, a hatch to access the battery housing presents itself to us. Using a sliding system of slides, it is quite easily removed. For repositioning, on the other hand, it is a little more laborious, it is necessary to insert the elements well and push against the poles of the batteries to find the closed position. Nothing very complex but other more “natural” systems exist. The hatch accommodates four vents which will allow, if necessary, an effective degassing in the event of a problem. No vent is provided for the cooling of the chipset but, in use, the box does not heat up.

A very positive assessment that illustrates a qualitative box on a physical plane.

Reviewer's comments on functional features

The proprietary chipset remains well in the spirit of the usual Teslacig productions. Being able to send 220W, it has different operating modes which we will detail:

The variable power mode: 

Adjustable by the [+] and [-] buttons in 0.5W steps, this mode can be used on a resistance scale ranging from 0.1 to 3Ω and will concern, contrary to the idea conveyed by the lexical choices of the brand, all types of resistive and not just kanthal. 

The temperature control mode:

Being able to go from 100 to 300 ° C, this mode will operate from 0.05Ω and up to 1Ω for the following resistives: SS316, titanium and Ni200. A parallel TCR mode will allow you to implement other types of resistive (NiFe, NiCr, different categories of SS, etc.) by entering their heating coefficient. A table is provided in the manual to do this and, for the types of missing wires, a simple internet search will enlighten you.

The mode of taste:

Although the house terminology here is quite elusive, we have a standard module to adjust the response of the output curve, either according to presets already established (Hard, Soft, Normal) or customizable (User). This allows you to cut a vape signal on 10 seconds according to your desires with either a boosted signal on the first seconds of the puff to wake a montage a little slow or the opposite to avoid a possible dry-hit.

Five clicks on the switch will block it by putting the device in bypass and five new clicks will have the opposite effect by turning the box back on.

Three clicks on the switch provide access to the various menus in which it will be easy to navigate using the [+] and [-] buttons. These manipulations are now fairly standardized on the market and, if you are used to juggling other boxes, you will not be disoriented.

The usual protections are all there, ensuring safe use. Do not forget to use batteries of the same brand, of the same autonomy and of the same age, delivering a CDM of around 35A, the Punk can deliver an output intensity of 50A, it will be necessary to avoid any disappointment in the case of the use of very low resistances. 

The chipset has three memory allocations where you can store three different profiles to save your settings in all their complexity: power, TCR, temperature, output curve, etc.

The button allowing you to change the configuration of the internal light signals by LEDs, gives you access to five possibilities and an OFF mode.

Reviewer's comments on conditioning

The packaging does not call for any particular comments. A white cardboard box houses a golden engraving of the box at its top. At the four corners of the lid, we find embossed impressions of cogs, just to put us in the warm atmosphere of the box from the start.

Delivered with a USB / Micro USB cable for recharging, the Punk refrains from other accessories and it's perfect like that, homogeneous and fitting with the requested price.

Note the presence of a multilingual notice that will serve us a little academic but correct French, in any case enough to discover the box in all its forms. Nothing to say !

Reviewer's comments on the use of the product

In use, we find well what makes Teslacigs is going from an obscure Chinese pharmacy to a large manufacturer. Indeed, the chipset, not content to align the same possibilities as the biggest in the field, also seduces by its rendering. A compact vape, well designed, generous and on which it is easy to modulate to find HIS vape. What more ?

Already, when the previous models were released, the most marvelous had noted a great qualitative leap forward, both cosmetically and technically. Punk is convincing us of this and, for those and there are many, who have fallen for the WYE, you will find yourself on familiar ground. The vape, flexible at will, has nothing to envy the best and, if we do not necessarily find the precision of an Evolv or Yihie chipset, we are largely on the right track and the rendering is up to the situation . 

The grip is quite pleasant and non-penalizing in use, even if the weight may represent a brake for some. On the other hand, the autonomy is good and, at measured power, you have for a whole cloudy day in front of you, including if you use and abuse the Christmas lights offered by the LEDs. Good news to be taken with a grain of salt all the same, it is obvious that if you are vaping at 100W on a 0.1Ω assembly, you will have less time ... Especially since the cutie has it under the hood and sends her watts like a real punk who pogote in the pit. 

Special mention for the protections, numerous and well-informed, which will allow everyone to play with the possibilities of the box without getting their fingers smoked, on the condition however that you take out your most secure batteries for use.

The mood ticket of the reviewer

The Punk 220 avoids the Top Mod by a hair, for political reasons. Indeed, first of all I noticed that I always put tops on Tesla's mods and that some will perhaps start to think that I am corrupted by the brand ... 😉 (I am way too expensive for them) and then, having never visited London, I do not want to be turned away by the police on the pretext that I would have praised the Punk movement, so hostile to our dear Queen…. 

But this mod still garners a Top in my heart. For its plastic that is different from the plump garments or “sporty” lines of the competition, for its assumed Steampunk universe and its operation, er… royal!

A passionate purchase that conceals no pitfalls, a box that sends what it promises, for a price that is after all adapted. And one more stone placed in the garden of a manufacturer who tries, with a nice breakaway, to overtake the peloton of followers to find a place on the final podium. Well done, thank you Gégé, to you studios ...
