Reviewer comments on business characteristics

Decked out with a surname that smacks of the tearful film or the Russian book in which all the characters die at the end, the Melo is nevertheless a great source of joy for its users and for the company that makes it: Eleaf.

So therefore, we can reasonably claim that all the previous versions have been bestsellers which have done even more for the diffusion of the vap 'attitude than our Minister of the Interior for the purchasing power of ophthalmologists ...

Also, it is normal to look eagerly at this new version, the V5, of this standard de facto and see if the quality of the family saga is respected and if the last-born brings new enough to stand out from his ancestry .

First of all, we can notice that the price remains essentially the same. Eleaf is keen on its image inexorably linked to the entry-level and is working to occupy the niche in a dominant position while raising the quality level of all of its production.

Still flying over the object and some technical characteristics, we realize that this is much more than a simple evolution or versioning on automatic pilot. The novelties are numerous and particularly judicious. Even before opening the box, I salivate in advance.

Reviewer's comments on physical characteristics and perceived quality

Aesthetically, the Melo 5 invites us to the show by affirming its moult.

No more clumsy obviousness, here we are in a warrior design that furiously resembles a chess tower. Bigger than its predecessor, it frees itself from its all-purpose line by a crenellated top-cap of the most beautiful effect, a base of 25mm in diameter which gives a formidable base to the machine and especially a pot-bellied pyrex that surrounds a silicone coil supposed to absorb shocks in the event of a fall, a pitched battle with your mother-in-law or a nuclear attack.

We can especially see a style effect that gives a real thickness to the atomizer. Stylistic thickness therefore since the perceived quality makes a large leap forward but very short since the diameter of the atomizer at this precise location still flirts with 29mm ...

The weight is average… high and the Melo 5 is a beautiful baby in every respect.

The finish has made some notable advances. Although the Melo 4 was already doing quite a bit in this area, the Melo 5 does even better and bodes well for good reliability over time. The threads are excellent, the joints seem to do their job well without complaining about the work and the airflow ring rotates without the need for an alligator clip or a backhoe loader to move.

The base presents a beautiful perceived solidity and accommodates your resistance without fuss all the more easily as this last Melo offspring presents a particular kinematics that we will detail later and which allows a change of resistance on the fly, even if the tank is full!

To finish with this chapter of the general characteristics, it remains for me to reveal to you all the intelligence of Eleaf which, although offering new coils for the Melo 5, has ensured its compatibility with all the EC coils existing in the range. Something to rejoice those who hesitated to take the plunge while bitterly regretting having bought 3000 coils in advance for the Mélo 4 ...

Reviewer's comments on functional features

Although already showing some very interesting new features seen above such as the famous silicone protection, backward compatibility and an aesthetic finally in tune with the times, it is in terms of functional characteristics that the Melo 5 stands out the most, not only from its ancestors but also from the competition. See instead:

First of all, Eleaf brings us two new mesh resistors. The first is calibrated around 0.15Ω and takes care of bringing you from 30 to 80W for the greatest pleasure of your vapophobic neighbors who utter long sound sighs at the sight of the slightest volute coming from your balcony. Here, it is a weapon of massive deterrence that will swing from the cloud like the Blaye power station in a heatwave.

The second is more wisely calibrated on 0.60Ω and opens the way to a wiser, more weighted vape, which will nicely range from 15 to 30W for “flavor” rather than “vapor” moments. And that's where we come across the second novelty of Melo.

Indeed, the clearomizer has been designed to work equally well in DL with a consequent inflow of air and a low value resistance, that in 0.15Ω, as in MTL where the resistance in 0.60Ω will work wonders associated with a tight airflow. . To allow this great difference, Eleaf has equipped its atomizer with a variable geometry airflow: you have a cyclops-type light of 1cm by 2mm which is next to a round light of 2mm in diameter as well as a last one of approximately 1mm in diameter. Thus, either you can open everything wide and there, to you the joys of the big vape, or you can condemn the Cyclops and choose to keep the two remaining holes or even the only last one. The result is bluffing, the versatility is present and, if you like to change the type of vape during the day, it will be enough to swap the resistors and modify the air flow accordingly. The egg of Christopher Columbus!

We are far from having completed this Prévert inventory of new features for the Mélo 5. In fact, you have now acquired the possibility of changing your resistance while your tank is full. For that, no miracle, just a little engineering treasure. In fact, when you unscrew the base of the tank, metal valves automatically rise in order to close the liquid inlets of the chimney, thus preventing any possibility of liquid leakage when changing the resistance.

Likewise, when filling, which is sometimes the source of some unfortunate leaks on certain references, you will have to raise the top-cap while sliding it. The lifting action also causes the liquid access to be closed, thus ensuring perfect sealing. And that's not all. Eleaf took the opportunity to change its filling orifice by equipping it with a silicone cover just slit in its center. Thus, it is just as easy as before to position your dropper through the slot and thus avoids any reflux of e-liquid on the top-cap.

In short and for a quick review, the Melo 5 does much better than its predecessor in terms of functionality. No revolution but precise evolutionary keys and common sense which greatly enhance the existence of a new version.

Drip-Tip Features

  • Drip tip type: 510 Only
  • Presence of a Drip-Tip? Yes, the vaper can immediately use the product
  • Length and type of drip-tip present: Medium
  • Quality of the present drip-tip: Good

Reviewer's comments on the Drip-Tip

The drip-tip has one merit, it is to be provided in the configuration. Otherwise, this isn't where Eleaf went the most. Traditional 510 connection which will allow you to replace it with the mouthpiece of your choice, medium length, outlet diameter of 10mm and plastic material, basic but proven.

The surface is slightly rough. Without being particularly unpleasant in the mouth, it therefore displays a texture that some will like and others not.

Evaluation of the packaging

  • Would you say that the packaging is up to the price of the product? Yes
  • Presence of a user manual? Yes
  • Is the manual understandable for a non-English speaker? Yes
  • Does the manual explain ALL features? Yes

Vapelier's note on packaging: 5 / 5 5 5 out of stars

Reviewer's comments on conditioning

The packaging is typically anchored in the brand's DNA. We therefore find the ubiquitous white cardboard emblazoned with the manufacturer's coat of arms, some basic information on the outside and, inside the box, we find the Melo 5 and a fairly complete bag of spare parts including mainly seals as well as spare silicone covers for the fill port.

Let's add, for good measure, that the atomizer arrives rigged with the resistance in 0.60Ω and that a resistance in 0.15Ω is provided to you in addition, so as to have a panel of the different forms of vape that the device offers.

A small downside however: we will appreciate the presence of a spare pyrex but it is not equipped with the silicone spiral. A small movement of avarice not worthy of the brand which weighs down a little the joy experienced so far.

Let us console ourselves with a multilingual manual which does not forget the language of Molière and which speaks it, my faith, with enough seriousness not to burst out laughing.

Appreciations in use

Reviewer's comments on the use of the product

After having seen all the novelties that Eleaf presents to us with his new workhorse, we still have to test the essential: the impressions of vape:

With the mesh resistance of 0.15Ω and wide ventilation, we end up with an ideal mix between the quality of the taste reproduction and the volume of vapor. The taste is omnipresent and, even if it cannot compete with flavor-typed MTL clearomizers like the Innokin Zenith, it takes advantage of the large heating surface of the mesh to saturate the flavors and allows itself to keep the dragee high. competitors, clearomizers or even reconstructable atomizers, in terms of rendering. The vapor is abundant, very white, very textured and adds thickness in the mouth which perfectly accompanies the precision of the flavors.

This comes at the cost, you guessed it, of a pretty impressive fluid intake.

With the resistance in 0.60Ω and an airflow between very tight and semi-open, the Melo 5 behaves just as well for a necessarily different result. The flavors become more precise, the volume of steam returns to normal and the consumption drops. Nothing but very logical after all. The overall quality is however still present and will largely suit MTL enthusiasts or even fans of somewhat restrictive air flows.

I note, however, that Eleaf pushes the plug a bit by announcing 80W maximum in the first case. I think the sweet spot is more around 45 / 55W. Beyond that, the resistance holds but the heat becomes overwhelming and cannot serve certain delicate e-liquids. In the case of the MTL type resistance, it takes the bet of 15 / 30W, depending on the air flow that you allow yourself.

A small useful note: the manufacturer recommends the use of e-liquids in 50/50 PG / VG for the Melo 5. I tried with a 30/70 liquid and it works without problem. In 100% VG, it works if we are not too greedy on the power and the chain-vaping but we clearly feel that we are reaching the limits of the atomizer. Of course, with the highest resistance, it is better to abstain altogether.

The Melo 5 works wonderfully and fulfills its role in both the taste restitution and the vapor texture. He has the decency of not requiring diapers because, over three days of testing, no leak has come to obscure the picture. Sometimes a tiny drop may escape from the airholes but this is more a product of high temperature condensation rather than a leak from the tank.

Recommendations for use

  • What type of mod is it recommended to use this product with? Electronic
  • With which mod model is it advisable to use this product? A 100W electronic mod that accepts atomizers in 25mm diameter
  • What type of e-liquid is it recommended to use this product with? I do not recommend it for 100% VG liquids
  • Description of the test configuration used: 5 + Tesla Wye + Liquid 50 / 50, 70 / 30 and 100% VG
  • Description of the ideal configuration with this product: A dark mod with shapes a little tormented to accompany the design of the Melo

The mood ticket of the reviewer

Full box! Not only does Eleaf put our eyes on us with its new form factor, but it also brings a staggering number of new features to the cm²! To say that the Melo 5 is a success is therefore a commonplace. He is better than that, he was able to take advantage of the quality of the Melo 4 while bringing impressive modifications to make the saga even more qualitative. All for a sweet price like a whiff of Five Pawns!

Top Ato de rigueur, well deserved for this “little big atomizer” who still has many years of successful sales ahead of him!
