Reviewer comments on business characteristics

Veteran vapers, those who survived silica fiber, mesh, diacetyl and so on, remember that Smok, then better known under the name Smoktech, was one of the pioneering brands of the vape and had known impose significant evolutions in the technological development of the personal vaporizer and its accessories.

Then, followed some “slack” or the manufacturer had gone astray in failed attempts, false good ideas and following materials which did not fool anyone. But these years are behind Smok because, for a few products, innovations come back and commercial successes follow one another, putting the brand back in the race for excellence. We are still waiting for the breakaway but Smok is leading the pack and competitor Joyetech is finally in the sights.

It is in this opportune period that Smok serves us a nice kit called Osub which consists of an electronic mod with temperature control with a power of 80W with integrated LiPo battery and a new clearomizer, a kind of simplified version of the TFV, which responds to the sweet name of Brit Beast, quite a program.

Everything is below the fateful bar of 80 € and therefore joins the competition, both in terms of the proposal as well as the power and the price. So a newcomer who could well play the dog stroke in a bowling game ...

Reviewer's comments on physical characteristics and perceived quality

Of a size contained without being mini, the Osub imposes by a particularly successful design, all in subtle curves and where the apparent simplicity of the object hides a most pleasant ergonomics.

Made of zinc alloy, one of the most widely used materials at the moment for its ability to be worked by casting and therefore take more daring shapes (and greatly reduce production strokes), the Osub presents well. Existing in red, blue, gray, black and white, the color duo, here black and steel, is particularly becoming and gives an impression of elegance in sobriety. We also find this happy simplicity in the simple finish, with a soft-touch paint and a brushed-like surface treatment of the steel-colored parts.

The painting is crossed by multiple irregularities which betray less care given to the installation by machine. Nothing bad, you really have to look to see the traces but since we are there to tell each other everything, let's say it. Especially since this in no way affects the very consistent finish of the whole, the adjustment of which has been the subject of special attention.

A mention of honor can be given to the switch which is extremely pleasant to handle. A distant descendant of Smok's previous wanderings in this area, it consists of a metal blade occupying an entire slice of the box, only the top of which is used to fire. It works very well, it's very responsive and aesthetically flawless. Here again, the fit has been well thought out and the blade does not wobble an inch across its width. Finally, a flagrant success of this particular type of switch that Smok has been refining for many months already thanks to these various proposals.

The screen unit, control buttons and micro-USB port for recharging and upgrading are located on one of the widths of the box. Thus, collateral damage, which would work perfectly for left-handers will be less obvious for right-handers who will see this part camouflaged by their palm. On the other hand, the ergonomics are well thought out. The control buttons in the shape of metal balls are obvious to the fingers and are easily triggered. They are also perfectly integrated into their location. The [+] button is located closest to the screen, let me tell you because no screen printing comes to define it on the box.

The screen itself is not very big but remains clear and can be contrasted according to your visual needs in the menu. It displays, in variable power mode: the power, the residual charge of the batteries in real time, with the small drop in gauge when you switch, the voltage requested, the resistance of your atomizer but also the number of puffs and the type of smoothing the input of the signal according to the min, soft, normal, hard and max modes which will therefore imply a difference in the voltage sent during the first moments of firing. Nothing like it to wake up a diesel assembly or, conversely, avoid a dry-hit on a hyper reactive assembly.

smok-osub-tc80-screen

The recharge and upgrade port looks like any other in its class. However, it displays its input limit of 5V, which is normal, and 1A. You will therefore be careful not to exceed this intensity. This would be at best unnecessary and at worst potentially destructive for the chipset as I do not know if it contains a dedicated regulator internally.

The bottom-cap has cooling or degassing vents always very useful. I would like to remind you on occasion that LiPo batteries are “soft” batteries, which are therefore less resistant to shocks than “hard” batteries. A box is not made to fall, I grant you, but pay particular attention to the behavior of your box if it happens. At the slightest sign of untimely overheating, react by putting it away from you and don't forget to film what will follow and send it to television, they are fond of this type of information right now ...

smok-osub-tc80-bottomCap

The bottom-cap also has a reset hole which will reset your box with the factory data in the event of a bug or failure. To do this, you will take a very thin object (syringe, needle, btr key, etc.) and press down on the bottom of the gap, which will allow you to recover a functional configuration.

THE ATOMIZER

The Brit Beast is a very wide clearomizer (24,5mm) and not very high (43mm drip-tip included). Its weight is rather low with 39g at weighing.

Made of stainless steel and pyrex, it presents a fairly conventional, stocky shape, very much in the spirit of what is being done at the moment. It still contains 3.5ml of liquid, which is not bad but which remains to be put into perspective in view of the liquid consumption.

smok-osub-tc80-ato

Its drip-top is very wide, flared upwards but has a limited internal diameter since it corresponds perfectly to that of the chimney. Pleasant in the mouth, it nevertheless allows to get the most out of the clearomiser and it is fortunate because it remains the owner, unscrewing the top-cap to give access to the filling.

The bottom-cap accommodates a fairly flexible airflow adjustment ring, based on your mod, which for once is not disqualifying since a simple fingernail stroke through an airhole, we manage to manage it at the better.

The Brit Beast uses 8Ω V2 Baby Q0.4 coils and remains compatible with the rest of the TFV8 Baby range even though I found the Q2 supplied particularly suitable.

Reviewer's comments on functional features

The Osub develops 80W of power and therefore offers a variable power mode and a temperature control mode confined to three types of resistive: Ni200, titanium and Stainless Steel. But you also have a TCR mode which will allow you to adjust yourself the heating coefficients of three additional resistives. What else?

The mod has all the protections we are entitled to expect today from a device of this type and no deadlock has been made. We can therefore vape in complete safety with the Osub.

smok-osub-tc80-profile 1

The features are known but hide small nice additions that we will apply to describe here by touring the implementation of the mod.

To turn on your box, 5 successive presses on the switch. The brand logo appears, followed by the name of the box and the version number of the chipset and a happy “Welcome” follows before being projected onto the basic screen. Everything is fast, we don't waste time.

If you press the switch 5 times again, you do not turn off your mod. You just put it on stand-by. It will not work, but it will continue to be powered. Make 5 new presses and you disengage the stand-by mode.

By simultaneously pressing the switch and the [+] button, you can adjust the attack power that we have already mentioned, namely whether the voltage transmitted will undergo a boost during the first moments of vape or the opposite. 5 possibilities here, from min to max, via soft, normal and hard. Obviously, the differences between the five modes are subtle but they exist nonetheless. As a general rule, boxes equipped with this type of adjustment are satisfied with three items, which means that each possibility is very clear compared to the others. Here, it is necessarily less obvious but, if you go from min to max at once, you will find that the difference is obvious.

By simultaneously pressing the switch and the [-] button, you will juggle between variable power mode and temperature control. Childlike and very intuitive.

Of course, we can (and we will!) Spice things up by entering the menu itself. For this, we press the switch 3 times quickly. We thus come across a set of sub-menus that we will detail. To switch from one to the other, we use the [+] button.

The first of these submenus is used to adjust the general mode (PV or TC) as well as the attack (min, soft, norm, hard, max). We choose the item using the [+] and [-] buttons and validate with the switch.

The second allows you to find the vape data recorded such as the number of puffs drawn but also to put a ceiling in terms of puffs (up to 999, I almost fell asleep while holding the button pressed ...) or to do a reset of the number of puffs recorded so far. Some will undoubtedly find it useful… Me, I prefer to count them by writing one line per puff on a blackboard… 😉

smok-osub-tc80-topcap

The third sub-menu allows you to manually adjust the resistance of your assembly. To the nearest hundredth of an ohm!?!?!?! I admit that I was stuck with it… I don't quite see what this can be used for, but it's a fascinating feature. We find ourselves very small, a bit like when we contemplate the immensity of the celestial vault by saying to ourselves: “and me who thought that my coil was 0.30Ω while it is 0.306Ω and that I can even lower it to 0.305 ! Ah, there are few things in this universe… ”

The fourth sub-menu is the Smok variation of the TCR. Namely that you will not be able to really implement new resistive wires but that you will be able to regulate the three which are residents with great finesse. I remind them: Ni200 (from 0.00400 to 0.00800), titanium (from 0.00150 to 0.00550) and Stainless Steel (from 0.00050 to 0.00200). But, if you are familiar with the heating coefficients of your resistive, for example NiFe, you will easily find the parameter corresponding to it in this infinity of possibilities (0.00320). CQFD… Same for various stainless steel or different grades of titanium.

The following sub-menu allows you to engage the stealth mode (stealth) of your screen so as not to be spotted when you watch your daughter who still goes through the window of her room to come out under your nose and your beard. You can also lower the contrast of your screen between 0 and 100 (100 being the factory default value) or program the timeout for said screen to turn off at your convenience.

There remain two easy to understand sub-menus. The first allows you to exit the sub-menus and the other to shut down your box for good.

Phew ... There would be something to get lost if, in the end, the ergonomics were not so simple. Of course, there are plenty of things here that are not fundamentally useful, but who can do the most can do the least, don't they say? In any case, there is something to have fun and spend a rainy Sunday to customize her box technically and to do tests while your daughter sleeps after her night out!

THE ATOMIZER

On a clearo, the features are, by nature, limited.

You will have the possibility of a fairly fine adjustment of the airflow while not losing sight of the fact that the Brit is made to send all the same. The filling is done from the top, after having concealed the airholes and unscrewing the drip-top, thus giving you access to a very comfortable filling space.

smok-osub-tc80-ato-bursts

The rest will therefore depend on the resistance you have chosen. I was only able to test with the Brit that the original ones, but I still had an excellent impression. Know that you can test, if your heart tells you, all the other existing resistances in the TFV8 Baby family and that makes a small package. I don't know if the Brit will be able to handle the T8 Core in eightfold coil for 0.15Ω but I wouldn't be surprised to see a consistent result around 60 / 70W because the Brit's air supply remains very comfortable.

Vapelier's note on packaging: 4 / 5 4 5 out of stars

Reviewer's comments on conditioning

Exemplary packaging which would almost touch Joyetech's supremacy in this area if Smok had split a French translation of its instructions. On the other hand, the instructions are complete and give you details of all the possibilities and manipulations.

The black cardboard box thus contains a first floor welcoming the box then, just below, a second welcoming Brit Beast, a spare pyrex, an additional resistance, a complete bag of joints, the guarantee card and the famous note of 24 pages !!!!

A complete packaging, therefore, well related to the price and the features of the kit.

Reviewer's comments on the use of the product

One thing to remember: inform and check that the resistance of your atomizer is well integrated by the box. It's easy because it asks you (new coil: yes / no?). Don't skip this question and do this cold calibration well.

If you did it this way, no bad surprises. Whether in variable power or in temperature control, the Osub behaves perfectly. The 3300mAh of autonomy of the battery is more than sufficient at medium power and still represents a good time to vape at high power.

There is nothing wrong with the mod in terms of use. Ease, reduced bulk, impeccable smoothing of the signal, everything contributes to generate a session of vape in the velvet. The chipset is responsive, the starting voltage settings are sovereign and will grant your Osub to any atomizer and any assembly.

While vaping between 60W and 70W for a very long time, I did not notice any weakness. Nor, moreover, than by changing the atomizer by juggling between 0.15 and 0.8Ω. The Osub bends to your every whim with discipline and does not stall before any challenge.

No untimely heating to report, nor reliability problems over a week of testing. The watchword seems to be: reliable and ready for anything! Of which act.

THE ATOMIZER

Perfectly paired with the Osub, the Brit is a formidable competitor. Great provider of clouds in front of the Eternal, that he makes you pay cash by a consumption of Dantesque liquid, the clearo rises to the height of the best in the category while respecting the flavors of the liquids that you put in it.

smok-osub-tc80-ato-topcap

I tested it with a tobacco macerate to try, bad boy that I am, to undermine the resistance by adding a good dose of deposit on the coils, nothing to do. After 20ml, the trick still works perfectly well and asks for more! Taste and steam, there is more to choose from. Here, it's all included, quite in the vein of the new clearomizers which are making the headlines at the moment.

The mood ticket of the reviewer

And hop, a Top Mod since we do not (yet) have a Top Kit… Why so?

Because the final grade is greater than or equal to 4.6.

Because, for a median price, here we have a perfectly balanced kit, which can work as it is when it leaves the box.

Because the quality of finish is very correct.

Because the electronic reliability and responsiveness of the chipset appeal.

Because the clearo is hellish and balances the flavors with an abundant vapor.

Because this kit can perfectly serve as a starter kit to an intermediate vaper who wants to get into the sub-ohm without getting his head.

And finally because the set-up is pretty, small without being ridiculous and comes to walk on the flower beds of the competition thus provoking, I hope, a new emulation to surpass itself during the next generations of boxes.
